How much is info and how much rpg rules etc - wondering if worth buying just for the terrinoth info

About 55 - 60 pages worth of history, lore, and a 1st person point of view "story" exploring the world.

Can the game be played solitaire?

Not really. The game can't even be played solely with this book alone, as you need the Genesys core rulebook to run the game. This is a traditional D&D-style RPG, so it's going to require at least two players (one to play, one to be GM). This is not a game like Legacy of Dragonholt, where it's an RPG hybrid that allows for solo play.

Does this book contain the core rules for the Genesys system, or does the Genesys book need to be purchased as well?

You need the Genesys rules as well. The book makes many references to how it changes or extends aspects of the core rules without repeating what those systems are.
