What is the compound grit size to charge the leather strop ?

My leather hone plate came with a stick of compound. The link below shows that the compound is .5 micron Chromium Oxide. Wet the leather and rub the stick on the leather as it is turning. Could you put this on a six flat disc sander (like one you would find on a belt sander)?

it is a leather stuck onto a glass disc, not sure how you would secure that to a vertical sander, would leave the glass edge exposed to chipping I think.using it in a vertical position

The hone kit is essentially the same float glass plate or plates that come with the Work sharp unit.  It is 6 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick, minus the leather.  You would be advised to buy another plain tempered glass disk and go to a leather shop or boot maker and get a nice piece of thick split leather and make up your own.  The leather on mine was so rough and poorly dimensioned for thickness and made my tool bounce around on it when using it.  I had to glue a new one on, hair side up, and it works very well now.  Just make sure that what you buy has been  been run through splitter and about as thick as a heavy work belt for your pants.  You can buy the chrome oxide honing compound at any wood working supply vendor and treat the leather with a thin coat of petroleum jelly before applying the compound.
